Acceptance of these terms

By downloading, installing, or using Ampersand (the “app”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the app. If you are using Ampersand on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to accept these terms for that organization.

The license we grant

Ampersand is licensed, not sold. Subject to these terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the app on devices you own or control.

• Free editor. The core editor is free to use for as long as you like, with no account required.
• Ampersand Pro. Pro is a one-time purchase (no subscription) that unlocks the Pro feature set. A single Pro license may be activated on up to 3 devices that you own or control.
• What you may not do. Don't resell, sublicense, rent, or redistribute the app or your license key; don't remove proprietary notices; and don't circumvent the licensing or feature gates. Reverse engineering is permitted only to the extent applicable law expressly allows it.

Payments and taxes

Purchases of Ampersand Pro are processed by our payments provider, Polar, which acts as the merchant of record. Prices are shown at checkout; the launch price is a limited-time discount off the regular price. Applicable sales tax or VAT may be added based on your location and is handled by Polar. We do not receive or store your card details.

Refunds

Ampersand Pro comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee. If you're not satisfied within 14 days of your purchase, contact us at hello@getampersand.app with your order or license details and we'll issue a full refund. Refunds are returned through Polar to your original payment method, and the associated license is deactivated.

Acceptable use

You are responsible for how you use the app and for the content you create with it. Do not use Ampersand to break the law, to infringe others' rights, or in a way that interferes with the app's security or licensing. Because the app runs on your own device with your own files, most of what you do never involves us at all.

Your content

You own everything you write. Your documents are plain markdown files stored in a folder you choose on your device. We do not receive, host, or back up your content, and we claim no ownership or rights to it. If you use a cloud AI provider or a sync service, that content is handled under those providers' terms, not ours — see below.

Third-party AI providers

AI features are optional and bring-your-own-key. When you connect a cloud provider (such as Claude or OpenAI), requests go directly from your Mac to that provider using your own API key, and only the specific text you act on is sent. Your use of those providers is governed by their terms and privacy policies, and any fees you incur with them are between you and that provider. On-device options (Apple Intelligence, or local models via Ollama) keep everything on your Mac.

Updates to the app

We may release updates that add, change, or remove features, or that fix bugs and improve security. Some updates may be delivered through the app's built-in updater. We aim to keep Pro features available to Pro license holders, but we may evolve the product over time.

Disclaimer of warranties

The app is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free or uninterrupted. You are responsible for keeping your own backups of your files.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the app. To the extent we are found liable, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the date at the top of this page. If a change is material, we'll make a reasonable effort to highlight it. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [Your jurisdiction], without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and any disputes will be subject to the courts of [Your jurisdiction]. This placeholder will be replaced with the final governing jurisdiction.
